My Brother Dustin

Do you ever wonder what happens to the people, places or things that you photograph?  Sometimes it’s easy to snap off a few shots and move on without thinking too much about it.  Do you ever think back on some of your photographs and wonder what happened after you took the photo?

On Saturday, my brother in law Dustin ended up in a hospital ICU ward after his heart essentially stopped.  Through the efforts of my sister and shortly there after by the paramedics, he was kept alive or perhaps brought back to life through CPR and a defibrillator.  At this time, he is just starting to come out of the medical sedation very slowly.  He hasn’t opened his eyes yet, but has started to move his arms and legs a bit.  I don’t know what is going to happen in the near future, but I take comfort knowing that he is stable and resting.

The picture below was taken the last time I saw Dustin, back at Canadian Thanksgiving.  At the time, I was testing the light, before doing some portraits of my sister, him and my grandparents.  I hadn’t paid any attention to the photo until I was casually surfing through photos while waiting for the latest update on his condition to be reported from my Mom.

The photo caught my attention, and immediately I was taken back to that moment that day, the jokes, the conversation, the family, the togetherness.  Though I am currently located in a remote area in northern Alberta many miles away, seeing that photo removed the distance.

What type of attachment do you have to your images?  Have you had an image seem meaningless at the time of a shoot but later reveal something larger?
