You can see the results on my Facebook Fan Page where the event was coordinated from. At this point there may be some more pictures coming in, but overall the results have been great. The topics were Nightlife and/or Gadgets, and I’ve been excited to see the different interpretations that were submitted.

If you check out the results, you will also see that there were a couple of videos that Graham Purse submitted following the Gadgets topic. I think that the results that he got with his Canon HF200 are spectacular and shows that high quality video can be accomplished with a “budget consumer” video camera. If you are not a member on my Facebook Fan Page then check out the videos at Graham’s YouTube page.

Thanks to all that participated or are still participating at this point. I hope that you all take the time to check out the photos and leave some comments.

Cheers!

Jared

This time around, instead of publishing the pictures on the website here, everyone will be able to upload their pictures to the event on the Jared Richardson Photography Facebook page. I am really looking forward to this upcoming event and am curious to see how many people participate. So far I’ve coordinated two photowalks, and I have been astonished by the images that have been produced. Each time I’ve learned something valuable from the experience, there is always a positive take away.

To me it signalled the end of a very challenging year on a variety of fronts, and at the same time renewed my optimism in what is lying ahead in 2010.

Specifically with Radarland/Jared Richardson Photography, I have started to make a move to make some changes. Over the last year, I have gotten good feed back about the discussion boards. I like the direction that the conversations were going, but did not seem to have enough traffic to really have them expand at all. At the same time, I have been looking for other ways to get people interested in my photography but also just in photography in general.

First off, my bother in law Dustin has been released from the hospital and is now completing his recovery at home. There has been so much support from friends, and family, and the prayers, thoughts or good vibes have been appreciated throughout. Charlotte and I will be going to visit Dustin and Kristelle next week, and are very excited to see them.

I am really hoping to get revitalized over the next couple of weeks. It will be busy, Christmas always is, but I am hoping that through it, I can refocus, get energized and get ready to finally finish some outstanding projects and prepare for some new ones coming in the new year. I’m not sure if I’ve felt this exhausted leading into Christmas before, since coming off shift last Thursday, I haven’t touched my camera and have barely turned on my laptop.

I guarantee this will be changing as I am already feeling the excitement of the upcoming trip to the Vancouver area. I am not sure that I’ll be able to provide frequent journal updates and photos, but I’ll try to get a couple in.

Thanks for reading!

Merry Christmas!

Sometimes it’s easy to snap off a few shots and move on without thinking too much about it. Do you ever think back on some of your photographs and wonder what happened after you took the photo?

On Saturday, my brother in law Dustin ended up in a hospital ICU ward after his heart essentially stopped. Through the efforts of my sister and shortly there after by the paramedics, he was kept alive or perhaps brought back to life through CPR and a defibrillator. At this time, he is just starting to come out of the medical sedation very slowly. He hasn’t opened his eyes yet, but has started to move his arms and legs a bit. I don’t know what is going to happen in the near future, but I take comfort knowing that he is stable and resting.

This is a pretty common conversation, and everyone has a bit of a different spin on the topic depending on how they have their work flow designed.

Most of you who either know me or read my journal regularly know that I utilize and strongly favour shooting in the RAW format and then specifically convert to DNG as part of my work flow. In brief, I love the flexibility of RAW, DNG saves me about 20% on the file size and contains all of the information in one file without requiring the need for sidecar files. Do I ever shoot JPGs anymore? Very rarely. The only times that I still consider shooting JPG are for sports or action photos. That being said with buffer sizes increasing on most of the DSLR bodies, along with the on board processing power, it takes me a lot to change my file format back over to JPG.

I’m sure I’m not the only photographer that this has happened to, and in talking to others recently, I know I’m not. This can be a side effect of the time of year or perhaps a lull in someone’s creative flow.

So what do you do with that photo or group of photos. Some people that I know would simply reject the images and move on. In some cases this is a really, REALLY good idea as cleaning up your digital clutter is never a bad thing. That being said, I often find that I spend a fair bit of time searching through old pictures during this time of year. It’s not that there aren’t things to take pictures of, but in my area the weather is turning cold, the amount of foliage is minimized, and it can be a challenge to even get motivated to go out and find something interesting to shoot.

In my first comments on it, I praised it for a couple of the really obvious things that I noticed. Since then, I have continued to push LR3B and am still quite impressed with the results. In fact, I’m so impressed that I have now started to import and edit my catalogues from LR2. I’m happy to say that the only time that I’ve opened LR2 in the last few days has been to double check settings or quite simply by accident. LR3B is, quite simply, that good of a product; the results are noticeable and the improved features are intuitive and easy to use.

Adobe released Lightroom 3 Beta (referred to as LR3B) a few days ago. I excitedly downloaded installed and started testing after watching the videos released by Julieanne Kost on the Adobe Labs site. Now that I’ve spent some time with it, I would definitely encourage you to download and try it out. As well, watch the videos, as Julieanne Kost, does an excellent explaining and demonstrating the new features.

I’d been passing over this image for the last couple of weeks, but something about it grabbed my attention. A few months ago, my brother-in-law and I were talking about Photoshop techniques, and how he uses texture as a graphic designer to create images with depth and how to bring a viewer’s attention into the subject that you are presenting. His examples of wood, metal, and rust textures stuck with me as I’ve been noticing them ever since.
